Week 9

I read the two articles on book trailers and watched videos from the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times. I watched some book trailers from YouTube.

From watching the book trailers in the articles, I can't say that I would want to read the books.  For me, the authors didn't make the book any more interesting than just reading a blurb about the book.  In fact, it made the books less appealing.  However, I did enjoy watching the trailer for "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" and "Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters".  Maybe because these were some of the more popular trailers, I enjoyed them.  Or, it could be because I enjoyed seeing how the book was depicted in movie format.  I'm not sure that I would seek out book trailers in general, but it's good to know that they exist for some books.  I think that book trailers would be a good idea for young readers since they are usually familiar with technology and might like a little diversion.

This has been a very long 9 weeks with a lot of work.  I use Library Thing to keep track of what I have read, but I will add Goodreads to my list of useful sites.

Week 8

I read the articles.

I viewed the video.

Sports - 790's - Seabiscuit by Hillenbrand
Travel - 917's - Off the Beaten Page by Smith
Crime - 364's - Devil in the White City by Larson
Biography - Biog - A Curious Man by Thompson

"A Curious Man" by Thompson is is a fast paced biography of Robert Ripley of the Ripley's Believe It Or Not. This book paints a vivid picture of a complex character who travels around the world celebrating strange and unbelievable things. In this book you will learn about this eccentric man and his unusually exotic life. (I would recommend this books to people who like biographies and are fans of "Believe it or Not".)

"Seabiscuit" by Hillenbrand was a popular come from behind horse in the 1930's. This is a heartfelt story of underdogs in the horse racing industry. With good characterization this exciting story reads like a fiction novel. This books details the life of Seabiscuit and those who helped the horse to become successful. (I would recommend this book to someone who was interested in horses or enjoyed reading come from behind success or inspirational stories.)

Week 7

I enjoyed looking at "What To Read Next".  The spreadsheet gave some great ideas of what to read.

I read "The Next Big Thing" and "Who's Buying Teen Books".  Both articles gave basically the same information.  I found it interesting that 78% of adults who were buying the young adult books said that they were buying them for themselves.  I have always enjoyed teen books and feel that they are shorter and faster paced just like the articles mentioned.

I commented on two colleagues blogs.

Cassandra Clare’s Tumblr is written by Cassandra Clare and she writes about urban fantasy for young adults centering on the adventures Shadowhunters.  The intended audience of this blog is for her fans.  It has lots of catchy graphics and sceens from her new movie.

Forever Young Adult is a site for YA readers who are a little less Y and a bit more A.  FYA is a place where you can let your inner Lady Nerd loose and swoon over fictional characters without shame. From book reviews to TV crushes to movie drinking games, it's basically a non-stop internet slumber party, and you're totally invited!  Readers may submit a novel, film or television show for possible review on FYA.  This site has a list of book clubs (one is in Baltimore), movie reviews and lots of other handy information.

Harper Teen and MacMillan have series as some of their top sellers. Seems as if series never go out of style.

Week 6

The genre link, "Stop You're Killing Me" has lots of information: new books, new audio, read alikes and different award lists.  This is a great place to go for avid mystery readers.

Yikes - there is a lot of good information on this Prezi.  However, I'm not a fan of Prezi.  There is too much clicking around and moving from place to place on the screen for me.

"Good Reads" has a sub genre for Cozy Mysteries.  Cozies don't focus on sex, profanity or violence and deaths are usually bloodless.  There is usually a likeable amateur sleuth and nosy neighbor.  The "Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder" by Fluke is the story of a busy bakery owner who tries to track down the killer of the deliveryman found dead behind her store.

Horror also has different sub genres.  Horror fiction is intended to scare the audience. At times, the scare is caused by a supernatural being like a ghost. Thus, the sub genre of ghosts. "The Graveyard Book" by Gaiman is a story of the grisly murder of an entire family, a toddler wanders into a graveyard where the ghosts and other supernatural residents agree to raise him as one of their own.

The genre Romance also has different sub genres.  Christian Romance books feature Christian characters and Christian faith themes. The characters in the books don't drink, use profane language and sex is only hinted at.  Janette Oke writes many Christian Romance books.  One of her popular titles is "When Calls the Heart".

Week 5

I have found that NPR allows you to browse a large list of genres for suggestions.  It also has author interviews and reviews of books.

The customers at RE really like the new stuff.  They enjoy the new popular fiction and like to look at the new book cart before we can shelve it.  I find that reading "People" helps to give me a heads up on what our customers may ask for.  Some customers even bring in their list of books that they saw on the Best Sellers list. Even though they like the new material, they are willing to read something older if it is recommended by us.  As a whole, I can say that we have a diverse group of readers whose interests vary from person to person.  I like that "Early Words" includes "People Magazines Book Review Index".  I find that I will probably use this again.

The anticipated title for 2013 that I choose was "Fly Away" by Kristin Hannah.  It is expected to be popular because it is a sequel to "Firefly Lane" and should appeal to readers of the original title.  It is a slow paced book of families, friendship and life experiences.

Week 4

I belong to Goodreads have created a shelf for Best Books.  I have friended colleagues and looked at what they are reading or have read.  I recommended the book "Breed" for Ellen to read.  It's a fast paced book with good descriptions and strong characters. It is the unnatural tale of parents trying to have a baby with the help of a fiendish doctor.

Week 3

Nancy Pearl kept her book talks short and gave a brief summary.

#1 I heard that the customer liked travel memoirs, descriptions and enjoyed the book "Eat, Pray, Love".  I would suggest the book, "Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson as he talks about his travels and hikes along the Appalachian trails.

#2 I heard, "Not Twilight" but likes vampires.  I would recommend "Blood Oath" by Christopher Farnsworth.  Nathaniel Cade is a secret agent for the president and also a vampire.  This is the first of the series.

#3 I heard, narrative, historical non-fiction with details, suspense and a fast pace.  I would suggest "The Longest Winter" about the Battle of the Bulge and the plight of eighteen men who were captured and survived in German POW camps through the end of the war.
